A sense of awe and excitement filled the air at the Steve Nash Sports Club Saturday, as children of all ages anxiously waited at the downtown venue for an opportunity to meet and greet the basketball star, Steve Nash himself.

After going through a brief workout with trainer Princess Labrador to try out new equipment, the 6’3” Phoenix Suns point guard made himself available to more than 150 young adoring fans, signing everything from jerseys to basketballs to posters.

In town to celebrate the one year anniversary of his $5-million facility, the two-time NBA most valuable player, who spent the afternoon at the sports club, was obviously impressed by the gym’s growth so far.

“I’m thrilled,” Nash said. “First of all, it’s beautiful. It’s the kind of place I want to come and spend my time at. To see membership grow and to see the atmosphere and the spirit is exactly what we had in mind when we started.”

Nash also said that plans for a new venue in Richmond are currently in the works.

The Victoria native made headlines last week when he officially announced his involvement with Whitecaps owner Greg Kerfoot and former Yahoo! president Jeff Mallett on a bid to bring Major League Soccer to Vancouver.

“We feel like we’ve put together a great team and we feel we can really give Vancouver the opportunity for MLS soccer,” Nash said Saturday.
