GUTS MCTAVISH

You don't need to be Ty Pennington to figure out that last year's version of the Vancouver Canucks needed an extreme home makeover.

In the 07/08 season the Canucks had the fourth worst home record in the Western Conference; basically the on-ice version of a home foreclosure. If the Canucks are to be taken seriously as a contender they first have to start with a new level of dominance at GM Place.

The first piece of the home dominance puzzle has been put in place by new GM Mike Gillis simply by addressing the gaping wound that was team toughness. Having a half dozen players on any given night willing to drop the gloves is a massive upgrade and a serious message to those beat up and tired teams that swing by on their West Coast trips.

The second piece is simply making teams pay on the power play. Tired teams take undisciplined penalties and it appears the Canucks can now ice two potent units or any combination of the two. Add to that the booming shots of Salo, Ohlund and Edler and there is a real shot this squad could possess a top-ten power play unit.

The final piece of the home dominance puzzle is an obvious one: Goals! If Alain Vigneault can show a little patience this year and leave his top three forward lines together this team could find themselves with three dependable scoring lines. Not many teams can claim that. Toss in fifty goals from the defence and a playoff spot is all but guaranteed.

Having just three home games in the month of October vs. eight on the road means we will have to wait until November to see if the head carpenter watching over this team has indeed performed a home makeover miracle. And by head carpenter, I of course mean Jesus.
