Most-watched Grey Cup in history
By SUN MEDIA
It may take as long for the full effects of the 97th Grey Cup ratings as it does for the pain of the Saskatchewan Roughriders to go away. This was the first year the CFL championship was measured with the new BBM Canada rating system, so the record could be from a more accurate number or simply a reflection of the drama involved in the game. At the point where the Riders had too many men on the field that cost them the victory, an astounding 8.3 million Canadians were viewing the collapse of epic proportions. So now both TSN and RDS can count themselves as winners just like the Montreal Alouettes. With an average of 6.1 million viewers on both networks combined, this was the top-rated Grey Cup in history. Only time will tell if this was a one-time spike, or if the title game continues to draw great ratings under this new system of tracking eyeballs. The Grey Cup was the top-rating Canadian program this calendar year, ahead of such telecasts as the Academy Awards and Super Bowl. The best Cup audience before this year was 5.2 million, set in 2002, the previous time the Alouettes captured the championship. |
