TORONTO - The Argonauts have fired head coach Bart Andrus after just one season.

Andrus struggled mightily in trying to adjust to the Canadian Football League, and the Argos finished 3-15, the worst record in the CFL.

Though Andrus often claimed that he saw improvement in his club as the season progressed, the opposite was true. The final nail came in the last game of the season, when the Argos were trounced by a Montreal Alouettes club that was resting most of its starters in preparation for the playoffs.

“We would like to thank Bart for his efforts during a challenging season,” Argos president Bob Nicholson said in a statement. “Bart came to us with an impressive resume and we wish him all the best in the future. Our search for a new head coach has begun and we look forward to building a winning team on the field.”

Part of Andrus’ downfall came with late-game mistakes that he later acknowledged. The Argos were competitive in a handful of their losses and probably would have won more had they had a head coach with CFL experience. Also, Andrus’ insistence on filling his coaching staff with assistants who had little CFL experience did not help.
