Marshall, Argos may be good fit

By TERRY KOSHAN, QMI Agency

Greg Marshall does not want to be a bridesmaid anymore.

But is there a potential marriage between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive co-ordinator and the Toronto Argonauts, who do not have a head coach?

On Thursday afternoon, Marshall said he had not heard from the Argos, despite reports that the club has asked for and received permission to interview him.

“I have not heard from them,” Marshall said.

“We’ll see what happens.”

For the third time, Marshall is the runner-up for the head coaching job in Winnipeg.

The Blue Bombers have hired Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive co-ordinator Paul LaPolice, with an announcement coming on Friday.

“I’m just disappointed, but there is really nothing else to say,” Marshall said.

With Argos president Bob Nicholson at CFL board meetings in Florida, a get-together that ended on Thursday, it’s thought the head-coaching search has been in a holding pattern.

Co-owners David Cynamon and Howard Sokolowski, who are trying to sell the team to David Braley, have not been involved in the interview process, a source said.

Toronto offered the job to Scott Milanovich last week, but he turned it down, choosing to stay with the Montreal Alouettes.

There has not been a clear answer as to why Doug Berry apparently has been put aside by the Argos.

The former Bombers coach would be a wise choice, and hiring Marshall would be lauded by many.

Though the name of Danny Barrett has surfaced, a source indicated he might be a fall-back plan.

With the other seven head coaching jobs in the CFL now filled, one of Berry or Marshall might be the Argos’ best options.

Meanwhile, Ron Heller, who was the Argos’ offensive line coach last year under Bart Andrus, has joined the NFL’s Carolina Panthers as an assistant with the offensive staff.
