Stampeders hire Murphy

By IAN BUSBY, QMI Agency

The Calgary Stampeders didn't go very far to replace the departed Jim Barker.

Former Stamps assistant player personnel director John Murphy has rejoined the team as its new director of player personnel.

Murphy left the Stamps a year ago to take the same job with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. It was a tumultuous time there with Murphy in the middle of a spy scandal and the Adam (Pacman) Jones signing and then dumping.

He was fired last month when the Bombers cleaned house.

"I learned a lot of things in the last year and a lot of things in the past six weeks," Murphy said. "I learned this is a person and people job more than anything else. You should be where you want to be with the right kind of people. You can enjoy success more with those people but when there is failure, they are the right people and they support you.”

Stamps GM-head coach John Hufnagel praised Murphy's skills as a bird-dog. Murphy will be based in his home in New Orleans.

"He has a good eye for talent," Hufnagel said. "The players he has brought into the CFL, he probably hasn't received enough credit for. He's helped this team out in the past. I'm excited about what he will be able to do for our football team this year."
