Flames re-assign first-round draft pick

By RANDY SPORTAK, Sun Media

Flames prospect, and 2007 first-round draft choice, Mikael Backlund is headed to the AHL's Abbotsford Heat, a source has told the Calgary Sun.

On his blog (http://nya.bloggis.se/mickis89) Thursday morning, Backlund said he's been reassigned to the minors, one of a handful of moves expected today.

The first year pro said: "of course disappointing but I (get) to play a lot which is good for my career."

Backlund added the coaching staff told him: "I have to work on some things" and he will play a lot in the AHL rather than the fourth line in the NHL.

The Flames haven't announced anything yet but will be releasing more assignments today.

What that means for Theoren Fleury is yet to be seen.

Fleury had another point in Wednesday night's 5-3 pre-season win over Edmonton, and had maybe his most complete game since starting his comeback.

Also sent down are Brett Sutter and Matt Pelech.

Not skating for "maintenance" are Theo Fleury, Curtis Glencross and Cory Sarich.
