Hockey

Gut Shot

By GUTS MCTAVISH

Michael Grabner will be on display tonight in Calgary and he'll do it on the Canucks' top line alongside Hank Sedin and Alex Burrows.

Problem is his big and possibly final opportunity to crack this squad comes at a time where injuries to key offensive players (D. Sedin, Demitra, Salo and M. Schneider) make defensive responsibilities job one.

The Canucks now enter the condensed-schedule part of the season where there will be a premium on early wins. AV will have little time for flashy players not pulling their weight defensively. And it's that responsibility that often paralyzes a young offensive prospect's ability to produce.

This is not the optimum situation for Grabner to excel.
