Look out Sawchuk, here's Marty
Brodeur seems on the verge of making history after coming within one shutout of Terry Sawchuk's all-time NHL shutout record of 102 in backstopping his squad to a 2-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night. Brodeur, who is already the NHL's all-time winningest puckstopper, now has 101 career shutouts.
Ovie a goalie's worst nightmare
Ovie seems to have outdone himself yet again. Washington Capitals dynamo Alex Ovechkin's two goals plus shootout winner against the Nashville Predators on Saturday night gives him a league-leading nine goals in eight games during this young NHL campaign. That's more than Nashville's entire team output.
Can't stay in the big leads
The Calgary Flames aren't the only team bearing the brunt of criticism for blowing big leads this season. Last season's Cup finalists, the Detroit Red Wings, blew a two-goal lead for the third time in seven games on Saturday night, dropping a 4-3 shootout decision to the visiting Colorado Avalanche. "We let them stay in the game instead of putting a knife in them and it came back to haunt us," said disgruntled Detroit coach Mike Babcock after the game, according to the Detroit Free Press.
