Tough day for Leaf Nation

By HOSEA CHEUNG

Two days later and Leafs nation is back in hiding.

After a 3-1 win by the Canucks Saturday, Vancouver fans can still hold their heads high over their Toronto counterparts, many of whom showed up at GM Place in droves to cheer for a losing cause.

Keith McColl, a 36-year-old Buds supporter who has been in B.C. for the past 15 years, is all-too-familiar with the Maple Leafs hatred on the West Coast.

"It's absolutely horrible, it's embarrassing, and living in B.C. as a Leafs fan, you take a lot of abuse," he said Saturday. "[Canucks fans] are just jealous of our success throughout our history, and I'm just going to go with that."

His Canucks-diehard friend Ryan Denbigh, 30, admits he admires the loyalty of those backing the blue and whites, even if they haven't won yet this season.

"They're passionate, they never give up," said the Nanaimo native. "I love to see the support they get when they come to town. It's always the best."

Leafs fan Derek Clark, 24, who recently moved to Kelowna, hasn't fully experienced the wrath of B.C.'s Canuckleheads, even though his girlfriend is a Canucks fan.

"So far they're pretty good, it's been a friendly rivalry," he said. "I drove down here with three Canucks fans. It'll be a long drive back up."
