Surgery for Leafs' Gustavsson

By ROB LONGLEY, Sun Media

COLUMBUS - The Monster is going under the knife Friday for the second time in his young career.

As reported in the Sun today, the Leafs confirmed this morning that Jonas Gustavsson will undergo an ablation procedure to repair his irregular heartbeat.

As well, the team announced that rookie Swedish defenceman Carl Gunnarsson will be out for six weeks with a hyper-extended elbow.

Joey MacDonald is expected to get the start for the Leafs tonight and judging by this morning's skate, it looks like Vesa Toskala will be his backup.

Gustavsson was rushed to a Montreal hospital following the first period of the Leafs 3-0 win over the Habs.

The big Swede had a similar surgery during training camp but it didn't completely fix the problem.

Leafs coach Ron Wilson said he didn't think Gustavsson would be out of the lineup for for as long as originally forecast.

“I don't know if it will be three weeks," Wilson said. "Right now all I’m worried about is the guys that we have. I get asked what’s wrong with this guy, that guy, we don’t know information at times."

“I’m told it’s not serious," he said. "Obviously when you are dealing with the heart, it is.”

The Leafs face the Blue Jackets here tonight looking for a fourth win in their past five games.
