WASHINGTON - Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin took the ice for Tuesday's game against the Montreal Canadiens wearing a "C" on his jersey after being named the club's 14th captain earlier in the day.
Ovechkin, 24, succeeded Chris Clark as team captain following Clark's trade to Columbus last week.
He is the first European-born captain for the Capitals and the sixth Russian-born player to receive the honour in the NHL, following Ilya Kovalchuk, Pavel Bure, Alexander Mogilny, Alexei Yashin and Alexei Zhamnov.
