Winger'll take hat-trick cheers

By IAN BUSBY, CALGARY SUN

Curtis Glencross fired the puck into an empty net, then watched as a few hats rained down onto the Saddledome ice.

The Calgary Flames winger recorded the first hat-trick of his career during Wednesday's 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes, and it was a special night.

But Glencross won't be telling anybody years from now how he scored them.

The first one was an Eric Nystrom shot that was going wide of the net that bounced off Glencross' arm and past goalie Cam Ward.

The empty-netter was on a clear-cut breakaway, and he didn't even need to make a move.

"Two non-highlight-reel goals, so maybe the fans felt bad for me," Glencross said with a laugh about the hats on the ice. "I will take them any way possible. I have to credit that first one to our pre-game soccer match. We play some hackey sack and that helps."

Certainly, his second tally was a legitimate one, as Glencross took a cross-ice pass from defenceman Jay Bouwmeester and, using a Carolina defenceman as a screen, ripped a snap-shot short side on Ward.

Glencross was paired on a line with Nystrom and newcomer Jamal Mayers, but the trio wasn't out much together since ex-Maple Leaf Mayers took 17 minutes in penalties.

But the night was all Glencross, who had one goal in his previous 15 games.

"It's something I will never forget, my first career hat-trick," Glencross said. "They won't be asking how, so I will take it."
