An NDP MLA said he would propose a "Tour de B.C." destination bicycle race if his party wins the May 12 election.
"I look at the terrain of B.C. and how we can market it in a very innovative way, the best bike race in North America," Guy Gentner (Delta North) said yesterday. "I think we could get some of the best cyclists in the world to come."
Gentner, who helped establish the annual Tour de Delta in 2001, spoke at the Sport for B.C. All Party Forum in Sport B.C.'s Richmond headquarters.
Liberal sport and healthy living minister Mary Polak said the government is taking an inventory of sport facilities to consult with municipalities on infrastructure projects.
"Much of what we've got in place now was built during the '60s, there was a large building boom then," Polak said. "Much of it is really in disrepair."
Gentner reiterated the NDP pledge to spend $100 million a year on community sports and recreation fields and facilities.
Gentner was pinch-hitting for NDP sport and Olympics critic Harry Bains.
