Berliners are celebrating 20 years since the fall of the wall, but London, Ont. speedskater Christine Nesbitt went there to rise to the top of the podium twice.
Nesbitt won gold in Saturday's women's 1,000 m race and Sunday's 1,500 m event at the first of five world cup stops before the 2010 Winter Olympics. She was joined on the podium Sunday by Winnipeg's Brittany Schussler, who won bronze.
Closer to home, Charles Hamelin won double gold Friday in 1,500 m and 500 m at the short-track speedskating world cup meet in Montreal. Hamelin edged Olympic gold medalist Apolo Anton Ohno of Seattle in the 500 m race. Fellow Quebecer Kalyna Roberge took silver in women's 500 m.
Canada's women's hockey team exacted revenge on the United States Saturday with a 5-1 gold medal win at the 4 Nations Cup tournament in Tikkurila, Finland. Jocelyn Lamoureux gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period, but Calgary's Carla MacLeod equalized and Meghan Agosta of Ruthven, Ont., gave Canada the permanent lead. Sweden edged Finland 2-1 in a shootout for bronze.
Defending Olympic champion Canada will play reigning world champion U.S. three times in December exhibitions.
