MMA is not always UFC 0
A couple of weeks back I got an email from someone who reads this column. He is a "Good Canadian Kid" who wanted to tell me that he reads 24 hours all the time and that he enjoys this little piece that I write.
Can you blame him?
However, he wanted to make a suggestion. Apparently I write too much about the UFC and not enough about other professional organizations.
My response to him was simple: the majority of MMA fans only really watch the UFC. There are hardcore fans that will watch Bellator, Score Fighting Series, Strikeforce, Maximum FC, Battlefield FL, ONE FC, Titan FC, BAMMA, DREAM, Sengoku, Aggression Fighting Championships, Unified Combat League, Elite 1 MMA, Tachi Palace, Road FC, URCC, Gods Fighting Championship, Ringside MMA, Amazon Forest Combat, Instinct MMA, Super Fight League and now the newly formed all women's league Invicta FC. Shall I go on?
The fact of the matter is most people don't have time to indulge in all of the above MMA goodness. There is probably a new professional organization that gets spawned on a weekly basis. One thing I recommend is keeping an eye on the Canadian scene especially here in B.C. There are some very talented fighters coming out of Western Canada. When I'm not writing about the UFC I try to keep things local and Canadian.
For instance last weekend Battlefield Fight League put on another professional show in Nanaimo (insert dig at Vancouver City Hall here). BLF 15 took place in the beautiful Port Theatre in downtown Nanaimo and it was a pretty exciting show with knockouts and submissions galore.
Congrats go to Nick Hinchliffe, Marcus Aurelio, and Shawn Albrecht on their big wins. You can go to MMASucka.com to see the full results.
Aurelio, the head of Vancouver's Axe Capoeira, keeps adding to his highlight reel of crazy knockouts with his KO slam of the very talented Matt Dwyer. Aurelio is probably the most exciting talent to come out of Vancouver in years. I recommend looking him up on YouTube.
In closing there is another local fight show coming to the Fraserview Centre in Vancouver this Friday night. Gerry Gionco presents "Total Mayhem!" Doors open at 7 p.m. and fights start at 8 p.m. I recommend going and checking out the kickboxing and some amateur MMA. Go to gerrygionco.com for all the details.
For any other suggestions or questions just hit me up on Twitter. ;)
