Vancouver Whitecaps Wesley Charles and Charles Gbeke will get a double dose for their Friday night fight.
The USL will announce suspensions this morning. The teammates' return could be further delayed by a club penalty. Undisclosed fines will benefit the Whitecaps Foundation.
"We are going to do something in addition to what the league does," said Caps' president Bob Lenarduzzi. "[Fines] will be enough that it will be an impact to them."
"When you hear your fans booing your own players - and I should add, rightfully so given what went on - it's not the way it's supposed to be," he added.
Defender and assistant captain Charles said "frustration kicked in" when he overreacted to comments made by Gbeke after he criticized the striker's failed two-on-one breakaway with Marlon James. Charles tangled with Gbeke and the two were separated by teammates. Charles was red-carded. Gbeke got a yellow card then and another four minutes later for kicking water bottles on the touchline.
"This was out of character, nothing like this has happened to me before," Charles said. "I let a lot of people down, people I don't know. I'm very sorry for that."
Charles said the "confrontation continued for a minute or two" in the dressing room, but did not escalate. "We had people there between us, it was nothing too serious."
He said he probably wouldn't go "for a beer anytime soon" with Gbeke, but they are friends and respect each other.
Head coach Teitur Thordarson said Charles will continue to assist captain Martin Nash.
"Wes has been a great person for us, I choose to look at that as a moment where he lost control," Thordarson.
