Arsenal keeps firing

By SUN WIRE SERVICES

Arsenal continued its strong start to the English Premier League season by beating visiting Portsmouth 4-1.

Abou Diaby scored twice before defender Younes Kaboul got a goal back in the 37th, but William Gallas and Aaron Ramsey added second-half goals to make the Gunners the league's top scorers.

Arsenal began the EPL season with a 6-1 win at Everton.

"In the first two games we have scored 10 goals," manager Arsene Wenger said. "You cannot ask a lot more. It's a brilliant start."

Manchester United recovered from a shock midweek defeat with a 5-0 Premier League win at Wigan.

Wayne Rooney hit his 100th and 101st club goals and Michael Owen struck his first to help give defending champion United the victory it desperately wanted after its 1-0 loss on Wednesday at newly promoted Burnley.

Victory kept United, which is chasing a record fourth straight title, level with Arsenal on six points, but the Gunners have played two games to United's three ahead of the teams' meeting next weekend.

Manchester City kept pace on six points after Emmanuel Adebayor scored for the second straight match to give his new team a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

United States striker Jozy Altidore set up a goal in his debut to give Hull a 1-0 win over Bolton.

"The fans will take to him," Hull manager Phil Brown said of Altidore. "He's a big, bubbly character."

Kenwyne Jones scored twice to give Sunderland a 2-1 win over Bolton, which has yet to win a game, while Birmingham and Stoke drew 0-0 in the day's other match.

Italian Serie A

Alexandre Pato scored twice to lead AC Milan to a 2-1 victory over Siena and give new coach Leonardo a winning start to the Serie A season.

Milan had struggled in the pre-season with seven losses in eight games. "We have won which is good, because we seemed to have forgotten how to," Pato said.

Bologna's Paolo Osvaldo scored the first goal of the new season in a 1-1 draw at home against Fiorentina, which got a second-half goal from captain Adrian Mutu.

French Ligue 1

Lyon's clinical 3-0 win at Auxerre showed early promise that Claude Puel's side can challenge for the title despite selling star striker Karim Benzema to Real Madrid.

Jean-Alain Boumsong gave Lyon the lead in the 31st minute when he flicked the ball into the net with his heel. Jean II Makoun and Miralem Pjanic had the other goals.

Lyon has won three straight league games, offering a warning in the title race to defending champion Bordeaux and Marseille, which drew at Rennes 1-1. Bordeaux plays host to Nice today.

Scottish Premier League

Celtic continued its winning start to the Scottish Premier League season with a 5-2 victory over visiting St. Johnstone.

Celtic got two goals each from Marc-Antoine Fortune and Shaun Maloney, while Scott McDonald had the fifth in the 74th minute.

Hibernian stayed level with Celtic on six points after a 3-1 win at Falkirk, while Rangers can reach the mark with a win over Hearts today.

German Bundesliga

Bayern Munich lost 2-1 at promoted Mainz to remain without a victory in the Bundesliga under new coach Louis van Gaal.

Andreas Ivanschitz and Aristide Bance scored for Mainz, which had not beaten Bayern in six previous Bundesliga matches.

Bayern, the German powerhouse, has two draws and a loss to sit in 12th place.

Greek Superleague

Sebastian Leto scored two goals and Djibril Cisse added another as Panathinaikos beat host Ergotelis 3-0 in the league's opening round.
