Slip, sliding away

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Manchester City was held to a fifth consecutive draw in the Premier League yesterday, playing to a 3-3 tie with Burnley. The result left Tottenham, which beat Sunderland 2-0, in fourth place.

City had rallied from two goals down to lead 3-2, but Kevin McDonald's late strike gave Burnley its first point on the road.

City has not won since September and this latest draw comes before a visit next week to Abu Dhabi to meet club owner Sheikh Mansour. He has lavished more than $300 US million on the team since last season.

Tottenham rebounded at home from back-to-back losses to beat Sunderland 2-0 on goals by Robbie Keane and Tom Huddlestone.

As City slipped to sixth place, Arsenal moved into second by easing to a 4-1 victory at Wolverhampton and Aston Villa climbed to fifth by routing Bolton 5-1.

First-place Chelsea and defending champion Manchester United, which was overtaken by Arsenal, play today. Blackburn moved out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 victory over Portsmouth.

Italian Serie A

Two Mauro Camoranesi goals within two minutes helped Juventus to a 5-2 win at Atalanta.

The win puts Juventus four points behind league leader Inter Milan, ahead of its match against AS Roma today.

German Bundesliga

Joel Matip, an 18-year-old midfielder, scored on his Bundesliga debut to earn Schalke a 1-1 draw at Bayern Munich.

Defender Daniel van Buyten's goal in the 31st minute had put Bayern ahead but Matip's strike in the 43rd gave Schalke its third consecutive draw and left Bayern winless in its past three games.

Defending champion Wolfsburg came from behind to win 2-1 in Hoffenheim.

Spanish Primera Liga

Pedro Rodriguez scored twice, powering defending champion Barcelona to a 4-2 win over Mallorca.

Pedro curled a shot around Dudu Aouate to give first-place Barcelona the lead in the 11th minute and then responded to Jose Nunes' 20th-minute equalizer by pouncing on a rebound just before halftime after three straight saves by the Mallorca goalkeeper.

Thierry Henry headed home his first league goal of the season in the 44th minute and Lionel Messi scored a late penalty kick for Barcelona.

Barcelona has 26 points and Real Madrid 22. Deportivo La Coruna beat Getafe 2-0 to join Sevilla in third with 19 points.

Scottish Premier League

Two goals from Kris Boyd gave Rangers a 2-1 victory against St. Mirren.

French Ligue 1

Auxerre notched its sixth straight win to beat struggling Le Mans 1-0 and move above Monaco into third place in the French league.

A poor start to the season had left Auxerre 19th place with only one point and no goals after the first four games. But Jelen's return has inspired the team and Auxerre now has 23 points after 12 rounds, putting it even with Lyon and two points behind leader Bordeaux.
