The total cost for renewing B.C. Place Stadium could exceed $600 million.
Minister responsible Kevin Krueger told a budget estimates committee meeting last week that the Oct. 23-announced $458 million will only cover the new retractable roof. He said $55 million of the $65 million pre-Olympic interior renovation has been spent, leaving $10 million for furniture, fixtures and equipment and video screens. Another $40 million is budgeted for deferred maintenance.
"Those two amounts together, the $40 million and the $65 million, are the entire allocation for the interior," Krueger said.
A government news release last January announced a "multi-project envelope of up to $365 million."
Krueger would not estimate the cost of moving the B.C. Lions to a temporary stadium at the old Empire Stadium site while B.C. Place is closed next year. The proposal needs Vancouver city council approval.
