Paralympics resurrects the Olympic spirit

By ABBY WISEMAN, 24 HOURS

Spontaneous crowd-waves got people excited in B.C. Place Stadium before the opening ceremony of the 2010 Winter Paralympics on Friday.

Susan Heilig was waiting in anticipation for the ceremony to start. She brought her family to support Paralympic athletes and show her children the importance of the Paralympic Games.

“For my seven-year-old son this is just wonderful,” said Heilig.

After watching the opening and closing ceremonies for the Winter Olympics on TV, Jim McBride was happy to get a last minute invite from friends.

“I've got a lot of respect for the athletes and I hope this is a good show,” McBride said.

As the crowd poured out of the stadium, attendees said they felt uplifted by the “one inspires many” theme.

Marie Jasmin was emphatic about the show and said she is now inspired to attend one of the sporting events.

Kathleen Kara and daughter Xaria both sported shirts saying “not only am I perfect, I'm Canadian too!”

Kathleen thought the show was “awesome” and was touched by the Terry Fox tribute while four-year-old Xaria said she just really liked the flame.
