There is a wonderful cafe called Swiss Coffe Cup at the corner of Seymour and West Cordova in downtown Vancouvr that is unceremoniously closing after receiving fewer than 2 months' notice from their property management company, Morguard. This Mom & Pop has been open at that location for 13 years and serves some of the best soup and sandwiches in the downtown core to a loyal clientele of nearby business professionals, as well as tourists and walk-by traffic. Perhaps what the property management company is doing is not illegal, but it certainly doesn't seem ethical to tell an older married couple of restaurateurs that they have to vacated the premises in a terse 3-line letter with no explanation or apology given. A few sources have said the rent is not even being increased. My guess is that they will be bringing in a chain, as Cadillac Fairview has done to Station Express Cafe in Waterfront Station as well as to many independents at the food court in Harbour Centre. Why is it that these property management companies think all people want to buy their lunches from chais over unique stand-alone operations?
