Surrey Traditional School's parents petition against Districts cuts to our program
I am a concerned parent of a Surrey Traditional School student.
My 5 year old daughter came home on Thursday afternoon and informed me that her teacher was leaving and won't be at the school anymore. After asking around, parents were informed by teachers and other parents, that the Superintendent, Mike McKay, had come to the school on Thursday and implemented immediate changes without notice. He cut two of our teachers and has forced split classes on our school, in turn increasing class size. I know this is very common practice in our current financial situation in the district, but these changes have been made with no notice to the parents of this Choice School, that clearly stated in the districts website, no split or blended classes and maximum of 20 students each division. We have had our children on wait lists to be placed in this school based on the fact that there are no split classes or large class sizes. We were promised these benefits and Mr. Mike McKay took them away. Apparently the I formation on their website was wrong and no one is willing to take responsibility for it. We as concerned parents signed a petition against these changes and made enough 'noise' to get the assistant superintendent, Pat Horstead, and some other school officials to attend our PAC meeting last night to answer our concerns and address the false information that was placed on the district website for parents making choices about the schools they wish their children to attend. They refused to reverse their decision, even after parents offered to raise the funds to pay the two teachers salaries for the year. We are appalled at the treatment we received and will be holding a protest tomorrow morning at 9am at the School Board office on 92nd and 140th. All parents will meet at the school at 8:15am and convoy over together. We hope we can have your support in this serious matter involving the future of our school.
Thank you for your time!
