Private Schools Shape the Future of Education in BC
Public schools across Canada are now beginning to introduce some of the programs that private schools have been using for many years, including: individualized learning plans, multi-age classrooms and advanced academics. But private schools continue to lead the pack when it comes to integrating the most relevant education trends. Through targeted professional development, private schools can focus on specific areas of development and involve industry experts in the implementation of new ideas says Struan Robertson, head of school and Lakefield College School.
Parents, education experts and University admission professionals all agree that finding the right school for your child will help them succeed and give them an advantage as they move onto post-secondary education and their careers. Certain competencies or characteristics are valued in the post-secondary environment and in the workplace. I call these the Six Cs: curiosity, creativity, critical and strategic thinking, collaboration, confidence, and character. For the most part, private schools seem to do a better job of imparting these vital skills or characteristics in their students says Bryan Ide, a private school grad and Education Director at Key Admissions Strategy and Educational Enrichment in Vancouver.
But does private school help with university admissions? In a CTV interview earlier this year, The University of British Columbia said that they actively recruit students from the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, offered at most of the private schools, because the rigorous interdisciplinary program promotes critical thinking and is recognized around the world. The reality is that the first 15 years of a childs life determine the next 50 years. Private schools provide that solid foundation for children to build happy, successful, and productive lives Bryan Ide adds.
